Frozen pipes in Canberra winters
I’m Victor from Holy Mess Repairs. Canberra’s frosts freeze exposed pipes: outside taps, pipes on south-facing walls, hot water system connections, rainwater tank lines and pipes in unheated subfloors. Water expands as it freezes, which splits copper and fittings, and the leak starts when it thaws.

If your pipes are frozen
- Turn off the water at the main if you think a pipe may have split.
- Open the tap the frozen pipe feeds so water can flow as it thaws.
- Warm the pipe gently with warm towels or a hair dryer. Never use a naked flame or boiling water.
- Call us if it won’t thaw, or as soon as you see a leak.
