I’m Victor, and I run Holy Mess Repairs. My view on hot water is simple: find what’s actually broken before anyone talks about a new unit. Most failures come down to one part, and those parts ride in our vans:
- Elements and thermostats for electric tanks
- Relief valves and tempering valves
- Anodes, which protect the tank from rusting out
- Gas ignition, pilot and thermocouple parts
- Fittings, isolation valves and flexible hoses

Canberra conditions are hard on hot water
- Frosts. Exposed pipes and valves on outdoor units can freeze and split overnight. Lagging and correct valve placement matter here.
- Heat pumps in the cold. Not every heat pump performs well on a −5°C morning. If you’re switching, we’ll talk you through models suited to cold climates and where to put the unit.
- Long winter demand. Storage tanks work harder from May to September, so worn elements and thermostats tend to show up then.

ACT loans and rebates for heat pump hot water
Figures below are from the ACT Government’s Climate Choices website as of October 2026. Eligibility rules apply, and you need to apply through the scheme before you commit, so read the official pages first.
- Sustainable Household Scheme: low-interest loans at 3%, with no upfront costs or fees, from $2,000 to $20,000, repaid over up to 10 years. Heat pump hot water and evacuated tube solar hot water are eligible products. It’s for ACT homeowners, delivered through Brighte, and you need to attend a free one-hour workshop. Previous participants, or households who applied before 1 July 2026, can access up to $15,000 over the life of the scheme. (climatechoices.act.gov.au)
- Home Energy Support rebates (concession card holders): for ACT homeowners who live in the home and hold a Pensioner Concession Card, DVA Gold Card or Health Care Card. One rebate of 50% of supply and installation, up to $2,500, covers products including hot water heat pumps, and there’s a separate solar rebate, for up to $5,000 in total. Eligible households can add a zero-interest loan of up to $10,000. There’s an Unimproved Value limit on the property and a workshop to attend, and suppliers must be on the approved list. The ACT doesn’t currently ban replacing a gas hot water system with another gas one. If you’re thinking about switching anyway, ask us and we’ll price both options.

Canberra hot water FAQs
My hot water’s out on a freezing morning. What should I check first?
For electric, check the hot water switch or circuit breaker on the switchboard. For gas, check the pilot or the display for an error code. If an outdoor pipe or valve has frozen, don’t pour boiling water on it. Ring us.
Can you repair it while you’re here?
In most cases. The common parts are carried in the van, so a failed element, thermostat, valve or ignition part is usually replaced on the same visit.
Do heat pumps work in Canberra’s cold?
Good ones do, but performance varies between models in sub-zero mornings. We’ll help you choose a unit suited to cold climates and position it sensibly.
Can I get a loan for a heat pump hot water system in the ACT?
Possibly. The Sustainable Household Scheme offers 3% loans from $2,000 to $20,000 for eligible ACT homeowners, including for heat pump hot water. Eligibility and Brighte’s lending criteria apply.
Is there a rebate for concession card holders?
